How to Choose the Right Treatment for Your Skin Concerns

Published August 14th, 2026
With so many aesthetic treatments available, choosing the right one can feel overwhelming. Microneedling, laser treatments, rejuvenation procedures, and professional skincare may address very different concerns, which is why choosing a treatment based solely on trends or someone else’s results is rarely the best approach.
The right starting point is understanding what your skin actually needs. Skin type, tone, sensitivity, current concerns, medical history, previous treatments, and desired results can all influence which options are appropriate. Even people with similar-looking concerns may benefit from different treatment plans. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), for example, emphasizes that acne treatment is not one-size-fits-all.
Start With Your Primary Skin Concern
Before deciding on a treatment, identify what you would most like to improve. Are you concerned about acne scars and uneven texture? Fine lines and loss of firmness? Dark spots? Unwanted hair? Trying to address everything at once can make treatment selection unnecessarily complicated.
For acne scarring and certain textural concerns, microneedling may be considered because the controlled punctures stimulate new collagen and elastin as the skin heals. The FDA has authorized specific microneedling devices for uses including improving the appearance of facial acne scars and facial wrinkles in adults 22 and older. However, suitability depends on the individual and the specific device being used.
Consider Your Skin Type, Tone, and History
Your visible concern is only one part of the decision. A qualified provider should also consider factors such as your skin tone, sensitivity, active skin conditions, medications, tendency to develop pigmentation, previous procedures, and overall health before recommending certain aesthetic treatments.
This becomes particularly important with concerns involving pigmentation. The AAD notes that effective management of dark spots starts with sun protection and recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher; tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide can provide additional protection from visible light, which can worsen some forms of hyperpigmentation.
Match the Treatment to Your Goals
Different procedures work in different ways, and no single technology is ideal for every concern. Someone seeking improvement in acne scars may have very different needs from someone focused on unwanted hair, visible aging, pigmentation, or general skin rejuvenation. In some cases, a professional may recommend combining approaches or following a series of sessions rather than relying on one procedure.
Safety should also be part of the decision. The FDA recommends discussing the expected benefits and risks of aesthetic devices with a qualified healthcare provider. In October 2025, the agency also issued a safety communication after reports of serious complications with certain uses of radiofrequency microneedling, reinforcing the importance of receiving RF microneedling from a licensed healthcare provider who has appropriate training and experience.
Before choosing a treatment, consider:
Your main concern: Prioritize what you most want to address, such as texture, acne scars, pigmentation, fine lines, laxity, or unwanted hair.
Your skin type and tone: Certain procedures and settings may need to be adjusted according to individual skin characteristics.
Your skin history: Active conditions, medications, previous treatments, and sensitivity can influence treatment suitability.
Your expectations: Ask what kind of improvement is realistic and whether multiple sessions may be necessary.
Downtime: Consider how redness, sensitivity, peeling, or other temporary effects may fit into your schedule.
Provider qualifications: For medical aesthetic procedures, ask about the provider’s licensing, training, experience, and the specific technology being used.
Your home routine: Daily skincare and sun protection can play an important role in maintaining healthy-looking skin and supporting professional treatment plans.
Your Skin Deserves an Individual Approach
Choosing an aesthetic treatment should begin with your skin—not with the latest trend. Understanding your concerns, discussing realistic goals, and considering factors such as skin tone, sensitivity, health history, downtime, and treatment risks can help create a more informed approach.
